We went to Death Valley for a few days over the Christmas break, returning home after Christmas. Driving back, we spent a night at Ridgecrest, CA (which is about 2.5 hours from Death Valley) so that we could watch the sunset and moonrise at the Trona Pinnacles. It was a beautiful evening, very silent and still, not another soul in sight. Here is the Royal Swan under early moonlight at Trona Pinnacles.
I wish had a better image of the Pinnacles with the WIP but it was tough to photograph with no elevated spot to park my WIP. I had to make do with a leafless bush (couldn’t go near the leafy bushes for fear of rattlesnakes). Here is a slightly wider photo.

Beautiful stitching with the scenery in the background. I don’t blame you. I am so afraid of ANY kind of snake!
Veena,
I spent the 3rd – 8th grades on the Naval Base in China Lake, Ridecrest was right outside the gates. Daddy took us to the Pinnacles on our 1st outing. Gosh it made me a little tearfull to read your post of my early home on the Mojave Desert.
We moved 90 miles north of China Lake to Lone Pine, at the base of Mt Whitney, in the the Sierra Nevada. Whitney is the tallest mountian in the Continental US. I wish you could have gone there, it’s just gorgeous. I miss it.
Death Valley was a stomping ground as were all of the beautiful places north of LP on Hwy 395.
Perhaps on another trip to CA you can visit the Owens Valley and the Sierra Nevada.
Think of me when you do.
I’ve been to Ridgecrest (have friends there) but have never been to Death Valley – there’s something wrong with this picture!
Hope you enjoyed your stay in the desert. Many people think it’s too barren, but it has a beauty all it’s own. If you ever get further south, be see to visit the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. I’d even give you a personal tour!
