Ann Dale 1827 Colors

These are the colors I used for the Ann Dale 1827 sampler by Shakespeare’s Peddler.  A full photo of my finished sampler can be seen here.  I stitched the sampler with Vikki Clayton’s HDF silk threads.  I chose colors based on photos of the original sampler on the madelena website, adjusting shades according to how they looked on my fabric (a mystery color from a grab-bag of HDF hand-dyed fabric). Note that some of these colors may “disappear” into the fabric. This was a deliberate choice, based on the photos.

I have first listed the HDF colors along with the DMC equivalent where available.  You will note that I have not provided the chart symbols in the table.  This is because I may have used multiple colors for the same symbol, or the same color for multiple symbols.  Therefore, I have provided colors by symbol for each motif.  Note further that there is no DMC equivalent for HDF variegated floss.  For some of the solid HDF colors, there is no DMC equivalent because the shade was created to extend or darken the colors in a particular family.  However, these colors may be purchased from the HDF website.  Lastly, note that SSF stands for Single Stranded Fine floss – which is half the thickness of a single strand of regular floss.  This was invaluable for the over-one stitching of the verse.

I did not keep track of thread quantities, but here is a guide:  even for a color that had a very large number of stitches (for example, that expanse of grassy hills surrounding the ducks in the last row; or the strawberry stems in the border, or the red wavy border) – I did not use up even one entire skein (8.7 yards, 6-stranded).

Caveat Emptor:  Please note that HDF is hand-dyed thread and dye-lots may vary.  The same colors may stitch up differently on your fabric.  USE MY COLOR LIST AS A GUIDE ONLY.

Thank you so very much for taking the time and going to all this trouble to give us such a comprehensive guide to the wonderful colours you used. I am touched by your generosity. It’s a lovely sampler and your colours enhance its beauty.

    • Remarkable work Veena and as Sue mentioned, it’s wonderful that you kept a color log and we’re grateful to you for sharing it with us.
All of the work is impressive and of particular interest to me is the shading around the ducks and egg on the bottom section, so much like the original.
      Absolutely gorgeous.
      Linda

  2. Hi,

Thanks for taking time to share this. I am kitting up for Ann Dale, still selecting and stitching test patches. Your colour log is invaluable to me !
